Scary Movie (2026)
Rating: 4/5

In 2000, the Wayan Brothers released a film that parodied numerous horror movies, which then spawned a franchise of these characters and plot lines that spoof some of the scariest horror films of all time. While some of the films are great and some simply don't work for me, I was still incredibly excited for the sixth film in this long-running franchise, which boasts the return of the Wayans to the franchise (thankfully). I already knew this movie was going to be a lot of fun and featured many of the hilarious gags and jokes the Wayans are known for, and this movie delivers. It is hilarious from start to finish, and I think the movie does a wonderful job of parodying all of these iconic horror films and characters, even if they feel a little out of place at times.
This movie's plot revolves around the reboots of both the Scream and Halloween franchises, with many of the scenes and characters being directly inspired by the two films from the last few years. The movie brings back Anna Faris, Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Regina Hall, Cheri Oteri, Lochlyn Munro, and Dave Sheridan, while also bringing in a slew of younger actors (Olivia Rose Keegan, Sydney Park, Savannah Lee Nassif, Ruby Snowber, and Gregg Wayans) to hopefully "carry the franchise forward". The entire film follows this cast of fantastic actors as they spoof movies such as Longlegs, Sinners, and The Substance, to name a few.
I went in excited to see what jokes and gags they were going to pull off with this film and I was not disappointed in the slightest. If this type of humor is right up your alley or if you enjoyed the first couple of films, you will have such a great time here. The comedic timing works perfectly for me, and I think all of the actors present here are so much fun and do such a great job of capturing the essence of the previous films. At the same time, it was a lot of fun to see these modern horror movies get parodied and point out a lot of the glaring issues that are present with them at times. Even if the movie they are parodying is considered great by the world, they are still able to make fun of it and I respect them for that. I also want to say that I think this is their best Ghostface in the Scary Movie franchise; there are numerous scenes with him that simply crack me up. From the sequence with "The Stuff" to him getting pummeled when trying to attack Teyana Taylor, I love what they were able to do with this character.
A huge standout here for me is Marlon and Shawn Wayans, which I was already predicting them to be. Marlon is simply fantastic as Shorty, and I would go on to call this character one of Marlon Wayans' best. He perfectly embodies this role, and the gags that are present throughout this movie work the best when Shorty is involved. The streaming scene with Kai Cenat made me laugh incredibly hard during both of the times I watched this film so far. At the same time, Shawn Wayans is absolutely hilarious as Ray, and I love how they brought back the jokes about him not being straight even though he is adamant he is. The scene where he pulls up to the church that looks just like the one from Sinners is easily one of my favorite moments in the film.
However, with all of that being said, there are moments throughout the film that shows them throw in these horror movie gags that don't fit into the whole of the film. They kind of just felt thrown in and the filmmakers weren't entirely sure how to tie them into what they were doing with Ghostface. While the Candyman and Longlegs segments were enjoyable, they don't add anything to the film as a whole and just felt random when sandwiched between two scenes that are actually telling the story.
All in all, I genuinely love what they were able to do with this film and I had so much fun from beginning to end. It is so nice and refreshing to see the Wayan family back in action with this film, and I hope that they are able to expand more of their older projects and give us sequels in the next couple of years. I have already seen this film twice now, and I truly can't wait to go and see it again.
